Graham Scott

Graham is a Professor in the Department of Biology at McMaster University, and he is broadly interested in the physiological basis for how vertebrates respond and adapt to environmental challenges. He attended McMaster as an undergrad and did his honours thesis with Chris Wood. He then completed a MSc with Trish Schulte and a PhD with Bill Milsom at UBC. He was a postdoctoral fellow with Ian Johnston at the University of St Andrews in Scotland before returning to McMaster.

Derek joined the lab in July 2023 after completing his PhD with Jeff Richards at UBC. His PDF is examining muscle development, mitochondrial physiology, and fuel use in high-altitude mice, in collaboration with Grant McClelland.

Ranim Saleem

Ranim joined the lab as a PhD student in September 2021, after completing a BSc at Wilfred Laurier University followed by a MSc with Ken Storey at Carleton University. Her PhD is examining mitochondrial adaptations to high altitude in deer mice.

Kayla Garvey

Kayla obtained her BSc at University of Ottawa, where she did an honours thesis with Steve Perry. She joined the lab as a MSc student and examined how evolved changes in haemoglobin-oxygen affinity influence aerobic capacity. She then started a PhD in the lab in September 2024 to study the evolution and developmental plasticity of cardiorespiratory physiology in high-altitude deer mice.

Patrick Ouyang

Patrick started his MSc in the lab in September 2024 after completing a BSc at the University of Toronto. His project is examining how mitochondrial futile cycles contribute to heat production in high-altitude deer mice.

Evelyn Alley

Evelyn joined the lab as a BSc student and completed a thesis in the lab in April 2024. She re-joined the lab as a MSc student in September 2025 on a project examining how chronic heat exposure affects running performance and metabolism in deer mice.

Sofia da Silva Matos

Sofia is completing a PhD under co-supervision at UNESP Jaboticabal in Brazil (under the supervision of Luciane Gargaglioni) and in the Scott Lab at McMaster. She is examining diving responses and mitochondrial physiology in cormorants distributed across elevational gradients in the Andes.

Isabella Kovacsev

Isabella is in the Honours Biology – Physiology Research Specialization and is doing her BSc thesis on the mechanisms of cold tolerance in high-altitude deer mice.

Naomi Menechella

Naomi is in the Honours Biology – Physiology Research Specialization and joined the lab in her third year. She is now doing her BSc thesis on the mechanisms of cold tolerance in high-altitude deer mice.

Andrew Millar

Andrew is a student in the Honours Biology and Psychology, Neuroscience & Behaviour program. He joined the lab in third year and is now doing a BSc thesis project examining how variation in huddling behaviour affects cold acclimation responses in deer mice.

Anna Noble Glube

Anna is in her final year of the Honours Biology and Psychology, Neuroscience & Behaviour program. She joined the lab in third year and carried out a project on enzyme function in high-altitude deer mice. Her thesis project is now examining mitochondrial adaptations to high altitude.

Sarah Winter

Sarah is in third year of the BSc in the Integrated Science program at McMaster. She started in the lab as a NSERC USRA summer student in 2025 examining how high-altitude adaptation has altered muscle development and metabolism in deer mice.
